Ovarian Aging

Ovarian aging is the gradual decline in ovarian function and hormone production that begins years before menopause.

Because the ovaries influence systems throughout the body, this timeline shapes far more than fertility — it is central to female healthspan.

What ovarian aging is

A gradual decline in the number and quality of ovarian follicles, and in the hormones the ovaries produce — chiefly estrogen and progesterone, with some testosterone. It is a natural process, not a disease.

The timeline

ESTABLISHED

Reproductive years, perimenopause when hormones fluctuate unpredictably, and postmenopause when ovarian hormone production is low. The transition unfolds over years, not a single event.

Why it matters beyond fertility

Estrogen receptors exist in the brain, bone, blood vessels, skin and more. As ovarian hormone production falls, the effects ripple across the whole body — not only the reproductive system.

Established, probable and emerging

Established: estrogen decline changes bone remodelling and cardiovascular risk. Probable: it contributes to changes in skin and mood. Emerging: links to other features of aging remain under investigation.

What we don't claim

Female Reserve makes no claims about ovarian rejuvenation. We study and explain the biology; we do not promise reversal of ovarian aging.
